Club Non-Travel & Travel Team Format

Our Winter Indoor programming is split into two age groups U14 & U16/19. For our U16 & U19 age division there are three different sessions. Non-Travel (Beginner - Least Commitment), Travel (Beginner/Intermediate - Travel Commitment) & National Indoor Tournament Qualifier (Advanced - Full Commitment)

The U14 age group is our youth programming. We hold practices once a week during the season with the option for either Travel or Non-Travel. If you decided to travel you will be placed on a team and those teams will travel to Spooky Nook Sports once a month (Sat) throughout the season. At the end of the season we enter a team into the U14 National Indoor Tournament. We be hosting a U14 Nationals team try-out this year due to that team now training on Sunday's with the U16 NITQ teams.

Our U16's & U19's age groups are split into like skilled teams and will have their own practice times.

Non-Travel is our Pittsburgh only training, Held once a week detailing the intro to indoor hockey and developing skills to learn the indoor game as well as creating a space to hone your stick skills without the commitment to travel once a month to the tournaments. Indoor hockey is proved to heighten stick skills and speed up recognition to help the outdoor game.

Travel is the next step in our programming. We will make team placements of all registered athletes and we offer once a week training sessions with your team coaches. Once a month (Sat) you will travel to Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, PA for a one day tournament with your team.

National Indoor Tournament Qualifier teams are the highest skill level training we offer. We will be hosting a Placement session before the season for all  athletes who wish to play on our National Teams. We will divide all athletes who register to be a part of the NITQ teams. We have 2 teams per age group. If we have an odd number of athletes and you cannot be placed on a NITQ team we will place you on one of our Travel teams who practice on Monday. For the NITQ teams they practice two sessions a week and the regular scheduled Spooky Nook Tournaments once a month (Sun). Furthermore we attend an additional tournament during the year which is called the National Indoor Tournament Qualifiers. If the team does well enough at the NITQ they will qualify for Nationals at the end of the year to compete for a National Championship. There is an additional cost for all National Tournaments.

During the season as we see how people are training/playing there can be movement throughout the teams to optimize each team depending on teamwork and skill. If you prove to us that you belong in a higher skill level team the coaches will make those decisions as the season continues. We have also implemented a four team maximum on the courts this season so most sessions are 45 athlete maximum. If we extend over a group registration we will have a wait list and then try to place you in a team.

Travel Tournaments

The Spooky Nook is the Home of Hockey for the USA. Located in Lancaster, PA, they organize several tournaments over the season. We have partnered with them to host all of our regular season travel tournaments. These events are single-day tournaments, we play round-robin pool games against and the best record becomes tournament champion!

The National Indoor Qualifiers (NITQ's) are a set of tournaments around the country organized by USAFH for all the clubs in the country to qualify for Nationals. This is also where NCAA coaches are there scouting for potential recruits. We register multiple teams to the NITQ's per age group (U-16 & U-19) and are having Selections on October 30th to determine the teams. Anyone who would like to be considered for the NITQ teams please select the "Selections" option on the registration. If you wish to participate in these USAFH events, you will need to become a full USAFH member as the insurance that is provided by your Venom membership covers only Venom practices and Spooky Nook tournaments and not National Events.

For the past 4 years we as coaches have worked to build our numbers, build our skill and more than anything retain our players from each season.  The appointment to our NITQ team is a privilege and an honor all in one.  The practices for these athletes will be held at a high level of intensity.  Athletes are expected to be ready to push themselves both physically and mentally.  Players who are not originally selected for NITQ teams could potentially earn a spot on the team with stand out skills, coachability, and game knowledge of indoor field hockey.
